Events to Help Tackle the College Admissions Process
Writing essays, compiling a resume, finding scholarships—where to start? U4SJ provides a combination of workshops and special events to give you the information you need and a safe and supportive “family” of friends and experts to help you on your road to college.
CLOSING CEREMONY
Finishing the year on a high note, USJ will celebrate our students’ completion of the program, their individual achievements, and the work of their mentors. We will also award USJ scholarships to a select group of talented and hard-working seniors. The event will close with an inspirational talk by an influential leader in our community.
SELF ADVOCACY FOR COLLEGE SUCCESS
An inspirational speaker will share their personal journey to motivate you to continue working hard as you reach the home stretch of the school year.
CAREER PANEL
Professionals from a variety of careers will talk about their journeys to higher education, their obstacles, and how they were able to achieve their professional goals. You will also learn about a variety of career options.
HUNTING FOR SCHOLARSHIPS
Because money for college is so important, we will have another session focused on researching, finding, applying for, and successfully obtaining scholarships.
WINTER PARTY
During this event, you will have the chance to take part in a variety of fun activities designed to help you get to know other students, mentors, and the USJ board.
MENTORING SESSION
This event is designed for you to work with your mentors on discussing your individual higher education goals and possible obstacles to achieving those goals. The mentor will provide guidance on creating a plan to help you succeed with your goals.
MONEY FOR COLLEGE
An expert on financial aid and scholarships will share information about local, state, and national financial aid/scholarship resources. The expert will make sure to also present scholarship opportunities for undocumented students.
APPLYING FOR COLLEGE
During this workshop, an expert in the college admissions process will teach you about the do’s and don’ts when completing and submitting your college applications. The expert will also give you concrete tips on how to improve your chances of getting accepted to your university/college of choice.
KICKOFF EVENT
Welcome to our first event where the USJ board and our mentors will introduce you to the USJ family. We will discuss our program which is composed of our workshops, mentoring sessions, and scholarship opportunities. We will also discuss what you can expect from the program and what is expected of you to successfully complete the program and fulfill your higher education goals.
