Helen Ackerman recently retired from her position of Vice President of University Relations at George Mason University. In her 25 years at Mason, she managed a 30 person operation and was responsible for the university’s public image and ensuring that Virginia citizens were fully informed about the development and activities of Virginia’s largest state university. Her responsibilities included media relations, legislative projects, publications, the university’s web presence and special events. A passionate supporter of education, Helen has volunteered with several organizations that have the goal of opening educational opportunities to the less advantaged.
For me, access to education is a human right. It is a way to open minds, to increase understanding among different people. Its one vital way to give individuals a chance to give their lives a new direction, however difficult their circumstances. Overcoming economic disadvantage is difficult even with an education. Without it, it is almost impossible. Students need all the help and support they can get to realize their dream of going to college. USJ gives guidance and support to ambitious students, and it is my goal to help USJ students in any way I can.
